Nate Troksa Ms. Schaefer Language Arts 3-4 March 23, 2015 Gender Inequality in Today’s Workplace Background/ Description of the Issue: As the years have progressed, the differences between men and women have been subdued to a more reasonable degree. Gender inequality is the difference in rights and treatment between men and women in today’s workplace or society. The origins of this problem can be traced back to centuries ago, where women never had the same amount of respect and rights as men. â€Å"†¦most women had very little to do with Athenian life outside of the boundaries of family and home† (Beck, et.al, 129). Women did not attend school and were mostly taught skills to manage and care for the home as wives and mothers, very few learned to read and write. In Athens and most other city-states, women were not permitted citizenship and had few rights. Citizenship was given exclusively to adult male land owners born in Athens. As women began to enter the work force, because of their history of being in the home, they were given service positions such as secretaries and food servers which rarely offered chances for advancement. This affected nearly everybody in families and the workforce. â€Å"Though discrimination according to gender is not permitted legally, in reality it is much harder to avoid† (Kay, n.pag). It’s very clever of Adichie to include Richard and the development of his book to her novel because she can inform the reader about the Biafran war in an unusual and unique manner. Adichie on the other hand wrote this novel in 2006 while the Biafran war took place from 1967 to 1970. She was also born in 1977 in an entirely different generation from the one she writes about. It seems very difficult to try to capture such detailed scenes in the book without having the proper experience to go along with it (Hawley 18). On the other hand Richard lived the war and was front and center to all of the malnutrition and awful things that were happening to the Nigerian people. Adichie’s significance of Richards’s book I think is to make her novel an informative one. As Anyadike states â€Å"Yet he took time to make special efforts towards integrating himself into the Igbo culture by, for example, learning to speak the Igbo language and developing a genuinely admiration for the Ukwu art† (143). The title of the book is The war was silent when we died As Adichie explains â€Å"He write about the world that remained silent while the Biafra’s died. He argues that Britain inspired this silence. The arms and advice that Britain gave Nigeria shaped other countries†¦and from their white-supremacist positions, South Africa and Rhodesia gloated at further proof that black-run governments were doomed to failure†(324). Many political and economical issues occurred in the war especially with oil. Overall many countries also were silent when Nigeria needed the help. At the end of every chapter of Adichie’s war novel a piece of Richards book is being displayed which gives the reader the impression that they are a part of making the story. It makes the reader feel special; I want to become a writer one day so having read this novel has given me an idea of how I might have the same issues with starting to write a book. After so much about the book Richard gives up and decides that the title is too powerful for him to put his name on it. The war was silent when we died has to be from a person who has lived in Nigeria and is culturally been Nigerian. Although Richard was a white man living in a Black man’s world he made a very clear and outstanding book. After reflecting on it he noticed it just wasn’t meant to be then Ugwu decided to take over and announced it as his own. Ugwu is the best person to put his name on that book he is a true Nigerian man who also experienced the war and much more. At the end I agreed with his dedication to his master. If it wasn’t for Odenigbo Ugwu wouldn’t be the educated and skilled person who he turned out to be.
